Dear John Gasser

Congratulations on a job well done! Your well written and researched piece was noteworthy for its balanced approach. As a retired Senior International Trade Specialist at the International Trade Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce, who well understands the complexity of international trade agreements and the economics of developing countries, I rarely read anything "commercial" in nature which spurs me to laud one's work. Yours did!

Dear Michael Knipe

Greetings from Nouakchott. Many thanks for the two copies of the Focus supplements on Mauritania which I received on Wednesday. Most impressive! My Mauritanian colleagues enthusiastically poured over the issue. So rare that we see information in the international media about Mauritania--and positive reporting at that!

I very much appreciated the story on the drought and World Vision's response to the crisis. Our program ends in September and we will be working hard to raise more government and private support to extend the distribution. Your coverage certainly helped bring attention to the people in this oft forgotten patch of sand. Thankfully, the rains have come and thus far, things look promising. However, we are now in the "sourdure"--the lean season between planting and harvest in October. Villagers in the interior are almost 100 per cent dependant on food aid.

Best regards,

Karen Homer

Dear Ms. MacCarthy

Thank you very much for your letter and a copy of the Foreign Focus report on Yugoslavia published in "The Times" on June 26, 2001.

After a decade long period of hardship and sufferings befallen on our country, it is significant to introduce the present-day Yugoslavia to international public in the light of democratic and economic reforms launched as a priority task by newly elected authorities of Yugoslavia and Serbia. In this context a sophisticated and balanced analysis published in the Report has contributed significantly to the presentation of a new image of Yugoslavia, as a country highlighting market-oriented economy and openness to foreign investments.

I believe that the Report on Yugoslavia has been as interesting and informative for other readers of "The Times" as it has been for us.

Hoping that we will continue our successful co-operation also in the future, I remain

Sincerely yours,

Maja Divac

Dear Ms. MacCarthy

I am writing to thank you for your letter of December 22, enclosing the report on Brazil.

As you may know, I visited Brazil with a high level delegation in October and was therefore very interested in the report which, I believe, presented a well-balanced and well researched picture of Brazil.

The Government is putting much effort into promoting Brazil as an export and investment market. I firmly believe that British companies are missing out on some of the many opportunities that Brazil has to offer and hope that our efforts, combined with initiatives such as yours, lead to a much greater awareness on the part of the British business community of what the modern Brazil is all about.

Thank you again for taking the time to write.

Yours sincerely

The Rt. Hon. Stephen Byers MP
Secretary of State for Trade and Industry

Dear Nathalie

I write to commend you and all those associated with the production of the quite excellent Barbados Supplement, which was published on November 13, by The Times in association with Pioneer News.

May I say that I was greatly impressed by the thoroughness of the research, the high quality of the writing and the attractiveness of the presentation which, in large measure, captured the vibrancy and dynamism of modern Barbados.

For the record, you would wish to be aware that the Prime Minister has asked me to convey to you his personal satisfaction at the outcome of this venture. Indeed, my feedback from Barbados, here in London and those Capitals to which I have sent copies, has been unanimously praiseworthy.

Since I had the opportunity to personally see the team at work (and at play) in the salubrious surroundings of rural Barbados, may I say that the supplement is proof positive of the axiom that we are all the products of our environment.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Simmons
High Commissioner

Dear Ms. Bonner,

THE TIMES SUPPLEMENT ON GHANA
Your letter of June 2, 2000 on the above-mentioned subject, refers.

I hasten to say that the supplement was well-researched and vividly brought home the modest achievements made by the Government of Ghana and issues that positively impact on the international business community.

Reaction to the supplement has been positive. Apart from numerous requests for copies of the supplement by the business community as well as friends of Ghana, there has been a corresponding upsurge in the request for information on Ghana.
It is our hope that in future supplements, your group may want to consider devoting the centre spread to tourist attractions to serve the wider interest of students and tourists.

Once again, I extend the warmest regards of this Mission to the editorial staff of your firm for the tremendous effort, which has undoubtedly, helped to improve the prevailing image of Ghana in the international community.

Mark Woyongo
Office of the High Commissioner for Ghana

Dear Ms. O’Callaghan/Mr. Drennan

I have received my copy of the Times feature on Ghana and hasten to congratulate Mr. Michael Knipe and all the contributors for the high level of professionalism displayed in the presentation. I also wish to convey my sincere appreciation for a job well done.

I believe the report will succeed in winning over a new crop of businessmen, tourists and others who would gain knowledge of what Ghana is about while those belonging to the existing constituency would be updated and more deeply informed. We are encouraged in our efforts by your generous sentiments about our achievements and about the good example we have set for others, while your criticisms have been accepted in good faith.

The individual efforts of Sheila O’Callaghan, Peter Drennan and your team in this publication were commendable.

Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings

President
Republic of Ghana

Dear Mr. Drennan

Thank you for your letter of April 20, to the Secretary of State, enclosing The Times’ "Focus on Ghana" feature.

All too often the success stories in Africa are overlooked by the media. My congratulations to both you, and The Times, for producing this feature. I hope that it was well received by the readers of The Times, and I know that it was read with interest by the West Africa section here.

Recent visits by both HM the Queen and the Foreign Secretary, and our continuing trade ties, show the strong relationship Britain has with Ghana. We hope this will continue for many years to come, and we too look forward to free, fair and transparent democratic elections later this year.

James Bevan
